Fire extinguisher inspection cost

Expect about $5 to $25 per extinguisher for the annual inspection, plus a service-call fee. 6-year maintenance, hydrostatic tests and recharges are billed on top when they're due.

Prices below come from published price guides and public bid results, checked in October 2026. Prices exclude parts and replacement extinguishers. Your local rate depends on how many units you have, how far the technician drives, and state licensing costs.

What drives the price

  • Number of units. Per-unit prices drop fast on contracts with hundreds of extinguishers.
  • Travel and access. Remote sites, after-hours work and high-security buildings cost more.
  • Extinguisher type. CO2, Class K and clean-agent units take more time and parts than ABC units.
  • What's due. A year with 6-year maintenance or hydrostatic tests costs far more than a plain annual.
  • Repairs found. Missing pins, broken gauges, cracked hoses and replacement brackets are quoted separately.

How to keep the bill down

  • Do the monthly checks yourself so problems are caught early.
  • Ask your service company to group 6-year and hydro work into one visit.
  • Get a per-unit price in writing, including what's included in the trip fee.
  • Replace cheap units near their hydro date instead of testing them, if the quote says it's cheaper.

For fire-protection companies: pricing your inspections

Most small extinguisher companies lose money on admin, not on the inspection itself. Re-typed reports, forgotten 6-year dates and deficiencies that never get quoted add up. Fire inspection software built for small teams can turn each visit into a report and a quote before you leave the building.

Questions

How much does a fire extinguisher inspection cost?

Annual inspection usually runs about $5 to $25 per extinguisher, plus a service-call fee of roughly $50 to $125 per visit. Large contracts with hundreds of units sit at the low end; small accounts pay more per unit.

How much does a hydrostatic test cost?

Roughly $20 to $110 per extinguisher, often including the recharge. CO2 and larger units cost more.

Is the monthly inspection free?

Usually yes. Trained building staff can do the monthly visual check themselves with a free checklist. Some service companies sell monthly inspections as an add-on.

Is it cheaper to replace an extinguisher than service it?

For small, inexpensive units, sometimes. A 5 lb ABC unit due for a hydro test can cost close to the price of a new one. Larger, CO2 and Class K units are almost always worth servicing.
